It’s important that you be well prepared at your interview. Your job search has been a great effort to this point; and the interview is the most important key in the job search. To prove you have the skills and training you say you do, you need to prove this to the potential employer. Your career is important, so you want to perform at your best.
You must assemble a package of documents that tell the employers who you are; it tells the story of you. It also helps you organize your thoughts and save you time in the long run. Rather than having to rush around before each interview trying to find the materials you will need, you can just pull out your completed file and go.
Your personal information package is an up to date summary of your qualifications for a job. It contains documents that show who you are, what you have done and your training and educational background.
The first step is to find all the documents. You can show the employer originals or take copies and leave them. Some employers will ask for your social insurance number to ensure that you are eligible to work in Canada. Many government agencies are required to ask for your social insurance number; so make sure you have it with you. You will need extra copies of your resume. You can use this in the interview to refer to yourself; other employer may want an extra copy. If you have a certifications or diplomas, it is good to have them included. Include your letters of reference to show (or copy them.) These are good documents. Employers usually list your skills, training and characteristics. You must have references. These can include people you have had jobs with in the past, or at least two references from employers. Then, one personal friend is ok; or educational trainer. You may want to have transcripts from any training that you have done If you have won any academic awards, include them.
Arrange your documents in an order that you can find them easily. If you are using copies, make sure they are copied on quality paper. It is probably best to copy the materials and leave them with the employer for later reviewing. They will remember you better.
Portfolios are becoming popular with employers. They are an extension of this package.
