We have shifted to a knowledge based society. Our work world’s are changing at a pace that none of us can keep up to. The development of technology for job search has drastically changed how we find a career, find a job, get the skills and training we need to be competitive and how we live.
Technology is part of our daily lives and is a must in doing a job search today. We have access to vast amounts of information; we have different ways of communicating with people, and new ways of networking in our career. At the same time, technology has increased our access to information and we have many more opportunities for job search than ever before. We have greater access to distance learning too for upgrading skills and completing training. Many areas that are remote have the same opportunities as people living in large cities. Very cool! We also have more anonymity on the internet. People who may not have wanted to complete career counselling, can do so from home and sometimes are in a better position to share information.
Communication and technology is a great link for companies too. It links people from city to city, province to province, or country to country. You never know, you might want to consider a career in a far away land for a new experience. The Internet makes that much easier for you. You may be interviewed online, instead of in person for a new career. Physical settings aren’t as important as they used to be. You might even be hired to work from your home if you have the right technology. Companies are more flexible about work hours with people who are in careers with communication systems.
On a global scale, you may work in Canada but your boss may be working in England or Australia. Because of technology recruiting employees has expanded and will continue to do so. There may be several people interviewed for a job from many different countries. As well, it opens up more opportunities for job search to the candidate. Employment, therefore, becomes borderless! Therefore, you may live in one country and have a career that is in another country.
This is another reason why a person doing a job search may want assistance in counselling. Counsellors who are trained and built up international resources help clients to understand the nature of these technological changes. They have skills and training to support all the changes in the work place.
Counselling with an expert also allows you to have access to information in a technological manner. Many print materials become outdated quickly and are not up to date for a person doing a job search. The Internet has become a mainstream process for a job search. It has a powerful influence over a person’s career choices. In fact, it is the most powerful tool to the job searcher.
The Internet can allow for a career exploration to find tests, inventories, labour market information and job search information. Internet sites are being added by the minute. As well, the internet is fast becoming a medium to delivery career counselling. Our services in career counselling and job search are almost exclusive to the Internet.
What is important to the job search process, is that people have quality service and resources. You can and need to be able to access the information, assess its quality and how best to incorporate the information to your career plan or job search. Or, you may wish to seek counselling and support from an expert to shorten your job search and perhaps have a better quality job.
