You won’t get a job based on your appearance; but you could lose a job! It is important to look your best at your job interview. Yes, your skills, training and all the job search techniques you have put effort in are important; and so is your appearance.
No matters what job you are applying for, hygiene must be perfect! Clean hair, clean body, freshly saved, clean hands and nails are all essential for the job interview. The type of clothing you wear depends on the kind of job you are applying for. Whatever you wear, it needs to be clean, well pressed and in good condition.
You should prepare your clothes to wear for your job interview the night before your interview. This will save time the next day when you want to be preparing other things…like reviewing your skills, training and experiences. Here are some examples: mechanic-casual pants, sweater, shirt, tie; banker-full suit; secretary-dress or suit; nurse-dress or suit; retail sales-casual dress or pants. Remember to always dress up one level from the clothing that would be worn on an every day level at the job site. If you are not sure what to wear, take a trip past the job site and have a look at the people who are coming and going from the company.
Make sure the clothes you are wearing are in good repair, mend anything that needs mending, have the outfit dry cleaned or freshly washed and pressed. At the job interview, remember (women) not to wear perfume. Many people today have allergies; and it can be overpowering for the interviewers. Do not wear large jewelry. It may detract from the interviewers paying attention to the important questions related to your skills and training.
Remember to wear appropriate clothes for the type of place you are wishing to work for; and look your absolute best! It will enhance your self esteem and your confidence in your job search.
