Women have been working all their lives; whether they are working in their homes, the work force or for many, both. Women are being encouraged to enter non-traditional jobs that marks an important change for women. New skills are being sought by women who are not choosing jobs in the traditional fields of education, nursing and administration. As well, many women work in the sales and services fields.
There is still a minority of women working at a job that is non-traditional. However, there are more opportunities for women than ever before. When women are doing a job search, they want to keep in mind that the doors are open to them in many fields beyond the traditional female stereotyped jobs.
Women are joining the world of work in unprecedented numbers. Whether it’s by choice or for financial reasons, they are continuing to increase in numbers. Training opportunities are more available now for women than ever before; and women are being encouraged to enter training in the male dominated fields such as sciences, maths, management, business, medicine and law.
Women who have jobs face interesting challenges. They are still paid less than men. Women are still expected to complete most of the housework; and provide most of the care for the children. These issues are constantly being addressed by government, women’s organizations and women themselves.
The equal pay for equal value of work issues is slowly changing for women who are in a job. Women have excellent skills and education; and need to be paid equal to men. There is a more egalitarian society evolving for women.
It’s important that women know that there skills are valued, they need to know that training is available to them, and that continual upgrading of training is important. When doing a job search, women need to consider non-traditional jobs, as well as traditional jobs. Women may be interested in counselling to help them explore different options that are available; and learn more about women’s training opportunities. Counselling also helps women to value themselves for the contribution they bring to the work and their families.
As well, women need to be aware that there are lots of options for jobs. These can be jobs that meet their needs: part time jobs, full time jobs, contract jobs, jobs with flexible hours and schedules, temporary jobs and job sharing. These are all possible options for women who are doing a job search. Counselling can help women make better decisions about their futures and how they can blend family and work together and keep a balanced life.
